Daylight Saving in Queensland?

October 2, 2007

I can’t believe that even though two thirds of the Queensland population supports day light saving, there will be no referendum at the very least.

Clearly the majority want to see Queensland come in line with the rest of the country and world for that matter, and yet the wider population aren’t given the opportunity to have their say on a very important issue. The disruption no daylight saving causes because Queensland is out of step with the rest of the country and New Zealand is significant and so, therefore is the cost. The impact is across countless areas of business, not to mention the community.

Compounding the problem I believe, is that there appears to be a significant number of those who oppose it that actually don’t understand it. A “Relationship Counsellor” in this mornings Courier Mail said that he is against daylight saving as he has children and the change would mean they are up for an extra hour! A, you’re meant to enjoy your children and spend more time with them, which an hour longer evening twilight would mean, B, the sun sets currently at around 6.30pm, so with daylight saving introduced it would be setting at 7.30pm, not late enough to make a difference to the kids’ bedtime, and C, forgetting both of those, they’ll still spend around the same amount of time awake, so wont make any difference! Another in the paper said that it is ‘unnatural to change our environmental settings’ – you must be joking! And of course the curtains will fade and the cows won’t milk! Unbelievable!

So, I am simply at a loss to understand the logic of no daylight saving for Queensland just as much as no referendum. As was once famously asked – please explain?
